What are SSL certificates and what do I need to know?

Posted on September 29, 2021September 29, 2021

An SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer) encrypts the information that online visitors send and receive from your website. Every time a user provides confidential information (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.), a secure connection is established with the user’s browser ensuring that no third party will have access to it.

What is SSL encryption?

During the data exchange process through the secure connection provided by SSL, the transferred information is encrypted.
The encryption engine converts the information into a format that can only be identified with the appropriate decryption key.
Thus, no third party, without the required authorization, can read or intercept the transmitted data.

By using an SSL certificate, you protect your customers’ personal data and secure online transactions with them. This way, you create a reliable space where your customers feel safe. Depending on the type of SSL you choose, you will also have the ability to validate your site at various levels.

What is a money guarantee in SSL?

A financial guarantee of an SSL represents the maximum amount that the certification authority can give to the end user as compensation in case his encrypted data is decrypted.

Thus, with SSL you provide an extra level of security to your customers so that they can continue to make purchases from your website.
All financial guarantees are subject to the terms and conditions of the respective certification authority.

How do I create CSR in Control Panel?

To create a CSR in your Control Panel, follow these steps:

1. Log in with your access details.

2. On the Websites & Domains tab, select the SSL / TLS Certificates icon.

3. Select Advanced Settings.

4. Select Add SSL / TLS Certificate.

5. Next you must fill in the settings of the certificate in Latin characters, as in case the details are entered in Greek, the issuing authority can cancel the activation request.

No. 1 Certificate name: It will help you to recognize this certificate.

No. 2 Country: Fill in your country

No. 3 State or Province: Fill in the toponym for the county, city or province of headquarters. The data you enter must not exceed 64 characters.

No4 Location: Fill in your location. The data you enter must not exceed 64 characters.

No. 5 Organization name (company): Fill in the name of the organization for which the certificate is issued.

No6 Domain name: Fill in the domain name, for which you want to activate the SSL certificate. E.g: your-domain.com.

CAUTION: Note that www.your-domain.com is a different name statement from your-domain.com when activating security certificates. Please pay attention to the correct declaration of the domain (with www or without), as after activation it is not possible to modify it.

No. 7 E-mail: Enter your e-mail.

No. 8 Confirm that all the information you entered is correct and accurate, as it will be used to create your private key. Click Request to create your personal key along with the certificate request.

6. The certificate has now been issued and you can see it on the next page.

7. Click on the certificate name and on the new page locate the CSR section and copy all the text starting with the line \ —– BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST \ —- and ending with \ —- -END CERTIFICATE REQUEST \ —–
